My work is primarily based around Palestine, its recent history and ongoing culture. The 70th anniversary in 2018 of the Nakba - catastrophe - has encouraged pieces based on the less and less tangible memories centred on the symbolic Key of Return.
Highly prized Bethlehem embroidery has provided the inspiration for further collections. Reflecting my desire to see Bethlehem free from its current constraints, the 'Open Bethlehem' series has freed up and played with elements of traditional pattern and design to produce pieces that acknowledge their source but point in a new direction.
My current ongoing series 'Borders' makes intensive use of the tahriri (couched gold cord) designs on Bethlehem dresses to look at imposed borders within the West Bank. Most recently, during lockdown, I have been investigating the many circular designs, 'roundels', found on dresses and jackets.
